How to Create texture - the easy way!

A couple of weeks ago I was browsing the home stores looking for some inspiration.

As someone who has recently moved from a very 'Shabby Chic' home into a Mid Century Inspired space, I have to admit I am struggling.

These pretty vases, in - of all places - my local Habitat for Humanity Restore caught my eye.

Having previously surrounded myself with chippy goodness and distressed curvy furniture, I find the clean straight lines of my new home baffling.  Don't get me wrong - I LOVE the MCM but it is a different mindset.

I have to look at things differently and I find I need to take a step back. I am finding decision making hard when it comes to these pieces - they are the exact opposite of my comfort zone!

These vases got me thinking - I have a few pieces around my home that I like, but are perhaps a little too on the 'Chic' side and less on the modern. But some carefully applied texture can fix all that in a heartbeat!

So here is what I did. Firstly I bought the vases - at $10 and $5 each I couldn't resist. It is such an excellent cause!

Then I got to work. Back home I reached for my Fusion Mineral Paint, The Vases looked to me like a good mix of Raw Silk and Putty.

I love these little pots of magic - I chose Raw Silk and Ash for my project!

I grabbed a bag of Fresco - an AWESOME texturizing powder that I simply need to add to my paint for some extra weight and thickness.

Finally, I figured a little pot of White Wax from Homestead House was called for. I could, I am sure, create that look with dry brushing, but there is something so pretty and enticing about the White Wax!

FInally my brush...of How I LOVE my Staalmeester! This one is the #22 Round Sash Brush. It just makes my heart sing!

Then I got to it. First of all, I wanted to have a little play with the texture. I have this great little Woodgraining kit that includes these fab little rockers. I thought they would be about perfect!

Next was to select a project. Being a little feint of heart I decided to go with a small prictice project initially. Somethinf that could match my lovely vases. So I grabbed one of thise IKEA flinig boxes - you know, the wooden ones?

And I got to work!

I got my kit together! I think I should have washed that other brush a little more!

First I painted the Raw Silk directly onto the box - no prep needed this time as I am painting directly onto the raw wood.

I applied the Raw Silk in a haphazard manner - not worried about smooth application today!

I wanted my Fresco / Paint mix fairly thick and lumpy to simulate the texture of the pottery. You can add less fresco for a smoother finish if you wish. I mixed 1 teaspoon of Fresco with 3 teaspoons of paint.

I waited a few minutes so my Paint / Fresco Mixture was a little less loose and grabbed this tool.

Applying pressure I pulled the tool through the Fresco Mixture. I wanted to see the Raw Silk beneath.

Once I dragged it all the way to the top it looked like this.

Now I had to wait for the paint to dry!

Once dry I simply added white wax...

Then the final step...buffing!

And the last step...

LOVE!

And there you have it! I think I would like to add black wax too - but I dont have any to hand right now!

So go ahead and give it a go! So much fun and so easy!

Have fun out there!

Love, Love, Love.

St. Valentine's Day.

Hello!

Love is all around us.

Love is all around us.

I like the 'pretty', and the being nice, and the pinkness that can light up a dull February day.

I love him. He loves me. End of love story. Or beginning. Or secret. It's so exciting.

Well it's exciting when you are a kid. Or an adult. Or is it just stressful? And anxiety ridden?

Is it actually fun? Or am I just B'ah Humbug? I think it used to be. When I was a kid!

When I was a teenager - it was filled with angst and terror. What if there was no Valentine - or my crush didn't crush on me? Oh the stress!

Pre-kids...well every day was like Valentines back then! Honest!

The average Tuesday night looked like this before the kids!

Every day was wine and roses. Well, there was probably wine.

But today - it's a different story. I want my kids to have fun and enjoy. I want them to feel the excited tingle of anticipation. And, yes. They will get a secret card. And, yes, it will be from me!

The end.

Happy Valentines day!
